Algorithmic Structures and Educational Science

28.01.2020 -

On Monday, January 27, 2020, I followed the invitation to attend the research colloquium of Prof'in Dr. Christiane Thompson at the Goethe University Frankfurt. It was another good opportunity to discuss my perspective on the relationship between algorithmicity and the consequences for educational research and practice. I gave insights into an approach via Critical Code Studies, my seminar Educational Data Science (WS2019/2020) and touched upon the follow-up question of the epistemological consequences of data-driven procedures in interaction with qualitative methodologies.

In addition Prof. Dr. Stefan Ramaekers from the KU Leuven was also invited, who gave a very exciting insight into individual efforts for (parental) control or supervision by apps and thus the implications of digitization for humanity and social negotiation through speech (in educational settings). In addition to the reference to Cavell and the volume "Komplizen des Erkennungsdienstes: Das Selbst in der digitalen Kultur" by Bernard, the series Black Mirror, episode S04E02, Arkangel showed how processes of alienation and the handling of indeterminacy can be put in relation to educational theory and the philosophy of education  today.

Many thanks for the invitation and the exciting discussions with all participants!
